What is Voluma?
Voluma is a dermal filler in the Juvederm family that is used to restore lost volume in the skin. Voluma was first approved for placement in the mid-face. When Voluma is placed in the upper cheeks, it can restore the apple of your cheek, lifting your lower face. This will help smile lines or parentheses lines (nasolabial folds), marionette lines, jowls, and jawline definition. It will also provide a support structure for the fat pad under the eyes. Over time you lose the fat pad under your eyes which leads to hollowing and dark circles in this area. When Voluma is placed in the mid-face, you can see improvement in hollowing and dark circles under your eyes.
The active ingredient in Voluma is called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar that’s naturally found in your skin. Hyaluronic acid works by drawing water into the area to restore lost volume. Hyaluronic acid is the active ingredient in many dermal fillers including Vollure, Volbella, Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Restylane, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Kysse, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne, Revanesse Versa, and Belotero. The best part of these products is that you’ll see your results right away and they can be reversed in the rare cases where your results aren’t perfect. Voluma is unique because it provides a firm structural support which is ideal for bony areas such as the chin.
What is a weak chin?
A weak chin is when the chin does not project forward enough in relation to the rest of the face. Sometimes this is called the Bart Simpson look based on the appearance of the chins in The Simpsons cartoons. A weak chin is easy to see from the side view. When you have a weak chin, it also affects the appearance of your face from the front as well. Being a midline structure, the chin needs to project a certain amount to provide a harmonious balance with the rest of your face. An easy way to tell if you have a weak chin is by placing the tip of your index finger on your nose and the base of your index finger on your chin. When you do this there should be two to four millimeters between your finger and your lips. If you finger is closer than that to your lips or if your finger touches your lips, this is an indication that you may have a weak chin.
How does Voluma work to augment a weak chin?
The active ingredient in Voluma is hyaluronic acid, which works by drawing water into the skin to restore volume. Voluma is unique because it is a firm product and provides outstanding structural support in bony areas such as the chin. This is due to the higher levels of hyaluronic acid in Voluma. In the case of the chin, Voluma can be placed on the bone or in the skin. This will volumize your chin and make it project forward more. From the side view you will notice that your chin will be balanced with the rest of the structures in your face such as your forehead and nose. If you place the tip of your index finger on the tip of your nose and the base of your index finger on your chin after a Voluma treatment to enhance your chin, you will notice that there is more space between your finger and your lips.
You will notice some swelling after a Voluma treatment, this is normal. To decrease the swelling, apply ice packs for five minutes at a time as much as possible, sleep on an extra pillow, and avoid salty foods for a few days. We will also provide you with the Alastin Inhance Post-Injection Serum to reduce the swelling and decrease the risk of bruising after a Voluma treatment. You’ll see your full results about two weeks after your Voluma treatment once all of the swelling goes away.
